Reconditioned Electrical Equipment is Not as Safe as New

When you buy reconditioned electrical equipment that is reconditioned to industry standards, you can be sure your product will work just as well as it did when it was new. OEM and PEARL (Professional Electrical Apparatus Reconditioning League) certified reconditioners use a multistep process that ensures your products will work safely and efficiently. This process includes:

  •         Conducting an initial test
  •         Disassembling, inspecting and cleaning the product
  •         Replacing worn and aging components
  •         Reassembly
  •         Performing verification tests
  •         Documenting and certifying

After these steps are complete, the reconditioned equipment may even be safer that the original due to more stringent testing standards. If a retrofit is needed, this can save a companies a considerable amount of money and time that may be necessary to upgrade equipment.

However, the main difference between OEM and PEARL reconditioning is that PEARL uses independent, third party electrical engineers to review its standards while OEMS do not. PEARL also makes their standards available to the public to review and comment on while OEMs do not.

Reconditioning Electrical Equipment Makes the Underwriter Laboratory Mark (UL) Invalid

A UL mark certifies that a product was manufactured using UL listed designs and manufacturing processes. It does not apply to anything that happens to the equipment once it leaves the factory and that includes the reconditioning process.

Reconditioning Electrical Equipment Increases Liability Concerns

Last of the reconditioning electrical equipment myths is that it increases liability concerns. The truth is, after electrical equipment is reconditioned, it is tested twice; before and after reconditioning, 100% of the time. There is no better protection against liability than these testing processes.
